SANCTUARY at The Duke Restaurant & Bar
Aston Norwood, Upper Hutt
I am delighted to have a selection of original paintings from my Sanctuary collection currently on display at The Duke Restaurant & Bar at Aston Norwood.
Sanctuary grew from my love of Aotearoa New Zealand’s native birds and the sense of peace, freedom and connection I experience in nature.
Throughout the collection, native birds including tūī, kererū, kea, kākā, pīwakawaka, pūkeko, kōtare and tauhou appear amongst lotus flowers, water lilies, native flora and reflective landscapes.
The lotus has been an important symbol within my artwork for many years. Rising from dark water towards the light, it represents transformation, resilience and the possibility of growth. The birds bring another dimension to this story, representing freedom, belonging, guardianship and the wisdom of the natural world.
Gold also plays an important part in many of these paintings. As the surrounding light changes throughout the day, different areas of the artwork illuminate and recede, allowing each painting to reveal itself a little differently over time.
For me, Sanctuary is ultimately about finding those moments of stillness that remain available to us even when the world around us feels busy or uncertain.
I am very pleased to now have these works displayed within the beautiful surroundings of The Duke Restaurant & Bar, where they can be enjoyed by visitors and diners.
